Israel has been in a near-continuous state of conflict since the day of its proclamation, some seventy years ago. It has sustained its military through compulsory service. The overwhelming majority of those in its Defense Forces were born in Israel, raised alongside this notion of service. But theirs is not the only story of Israel's soldiers. There is a group of young men and women, non-Israelis numbering in the thousands, who come from countries around the world and volunteer into this legacy. For them, the price of admission into Israeli society is this very service. They are called lone soldiers. Canadian photo-essayist Brant Slomovic considers their story through portraits and a survey of Israel's landscape. He asks where they came from, who they are, and why they sought out Israel as their home.

Friedman, Matti: - Matti Friedmanis an Israeli Canadian journalist and author. He is an op-ed contributor for the New York Times. Between 2006 and the end of 2011, Friedman was a reporter and editor in the Jerusalem bureau of the Associated Press (AP) news agency. During his journalistic career, he also worked as a reporter in Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Moscow and Washington, D.C. Friedman first drew wide attention with a pair of essays about anti-Israel media bias that included sharp criticism of his former employer, the Associated Press.

Rosseel, Jan: - Jan Rosseel (b. 1979) studied documentary photography at the Royal academy of arts in The Hague, The Netherlands and photojournalism at the Danish School of Media and Journalism in Aarhus, Denmark. He was the first artist to be awarded a research fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences.

Slomovic, Brant: - Brant Slomovic (b. 1970) is a Canadian photo essayist based in Toronto, with a background as an emergency medicine physician. His experience as a healthcare provider informs a perspective on the human condition and imbues him with an extreme sense of professional responsibility. These attributes are carried into his role as a storyteller and image maker. He employs long-form documentary projects to examine narratives of cultural identity. Brant views every person through a lens of commonality and connection, and believes that images that explore our humanity can be a source of unification through diversity.
