The School for Scandal is a comedy of manners, a play satirizing the behavior and customs of upper classes through witty dialogue and an intricate plot with comic situations that expose various shortcomings of the characters. Richard Sheridan, an Irish playwright, poet and long-term owner of the London Royal Theatre, Drury Lane, is best remembered as the author of two comedies—The School for Scandal and The Rivals. His comedies show a reaction against the sentimental comedy which had dominated the English theatre for much of the 18th century.
