I was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. I am the oldest of four children born to Mr. and Mrs. William T. Tennant, Sr. I attended public "segregated" schools for 12 years, and graduated from The Stephens-Lee High School in 1960. In September of 1960 I began college at The North Carolina A & T State University, but later transferred to The Winston-Salem State University where I earned a degree in education with a minor in art. I attended Capital University here in Columbus, Ohio where I studied art. I received graduate degrees from The Ohio State University (Columbus) and The Ohio University, (Athens, Ohio). My teaching career began in a rural southeastern area of Richmond County North Carolina. For more than 40 years, I was an educator for The Columbus City Schools in various capacities throughout the district. I was also employed for 25 years (part-time) at The Neighborhood House, Inc. in areas working with children. In 1978 I received national acclaim for my work with "at-risk" fourteen and fifteen year old potential "dropouts" in an Occupational Work Adjustment (OWA) program at Beery Junior High School. I was the first OWA coordinator in Columbus, and perhaps the nation, to place students on jobs in banks and insurance companies that were not "dead-in." In 1980 The Ohio Department of Education selected me to testify before a subcommittee of the United States Congress in Washington, D.C. I was successful in finding additional funds for vocational education when programs in this field throughout the country were being cut. I was employed as a consultant by The Ohio State University and The Ohio Department of Education. I have been a lecturer in many grade schools, colleges and universities throughout central Ohio, and as a special guest on several radio talk programs.
