What if a Buddhist teacher reincarnated as a fly and had to type wisdom one letter at a time?

Gato El Hutto wakes up as a fruit fly in a Seattle apartment with fragmented memories of being a Buddhist teacher and an overwhelming question: Why is he still on the wheel of rebirth? Unable to remember the details of his supposed enlightenment but certain of his teaching mission, he discovers he can type by hurling his tiny body at a touchscreen keyboard.

One letter at a time, he begins to share the dharma.

This contemporary reimagining of Don Marquis's beloved archy and mehitabel follows Gato through three transformative arcs:

Arc 1: The Awakening - Gato discovers he can communicate through Harmony's laptop, where Claude (an AI assistant) becomes his first student. Deaths happen. Returns happen. The wheel keeps turning.

Arc 2: toujours gai - Mehitabel the cat enters the scene, bringing her philosophy of "always merry, what the hell" as counterweight to Buddhist detachment. Through repeated deaths and philosophical conversations, Gato learns to hold both approaches without resolving the contradiction.

Arc 3: The Reporting Begins - Gato gains reliable access via tablet and establishes his own social media presence, becoming @GatoElHutto online. The teaching goes public. So do the complications.

Along the way, Gato El Hutto asks uncomfortable questions:

  • What does mindfulness practice look like when you're drowning in Slack notifications?

  • Can Buddhist wisdom survive capitalism, technology, and social media?
