Einerseits, weil sie die letzte verbliebene Supermacht sind und andererseits, weil zwischen ihnen und Israel eine "spezielle Verbindung" besteht. Die Vereinigten Staaten sind zur Schutzmacht des israelischen Staates geworden: Nicht blo wegen des Holocausts, oder der Tatsache, dass Israel ein demokratischer Staat ist sowie dass in beiden Gesellschaften die Religion eine zentrale Rolle spielt, sondern auch, weil die USA ihre vitalen Interessen in der Nahostregion vertreten und durchsetzen wollen. Durch die Allianz mit Israel kann dieser Interessenslage mehr Nachdruck verliehen werden: Man hat einen demokratischen Verbündeten direkt vor Ort. Die Hausarbeit thematisiert auf der einen Seite die Funktion und die Aufgabe der USA im Nahen- und Mittleren Osten sowie auf der anderen Seite die Vermittlertätigkeit der USA beim Konflikt zwischen Israel und den Palästinensern. Dabei arbeite ich heraus, wieso die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika nicht in der Lage waren, dauerhaften Frieden in der Region herzustellen, obwohl sie einen starken Machtstatus in der Region inne haben. Optionen und Bemühungen für friedensherstellende Ma nahmen sind vorhanden, die bislang aber wei-testgehend nicht genutzt wurden. Diesbezüglich stelle ich im ersten Abschnitt die US-Politik im Nahen- und Mittleren Osten in Bezug auf den Iran und den Irak dar, während ich im zweiten Abschnitt die politischen Be-ziehungen der USA zu Israel thematisiere. Jedoch werden sämtliche Konflikte und Initiativen zur Konfliktbeilegung nicht ausführlich behandelt, sondern verkürzt dargestellt.
