Die emiichtemde Folgerung lautet: Wer, mit welcher Begriindung, Kemwaffenstaat wird, ist nicht nur eine historische, sondem eine aktuelle Frage. Solche Entscheidungen griinden sich im Regelfall, so die Lehrmeinung, auf eine Abwtlgung von Vor- und Nachteilen, vor allem der Kosten und der Ertrlige, auch in der ethischen Dimension. Reute nehmen die Zeitgenossen anders wahr, als zu Beginn des Atomzeitalters, was auch nur geringe Dosen des unsichtbaren Gifts an ZellscMden ausl6sen, bis hin zu den Nachkommen. Das Spiel mit dem nuklearen Feuer begann frivol, ohne daB man den Nebenfolgen allzuviel Beachtung schenkte. Die damaligen Begriindungen fUr die Entscheidung, den nuklearen Weg zu gehen, nehmen sich heute merk- darum, ob man sich dem Risiko wiirdig schal aus. Es ging urn Militarpoliti- einer nuklearen Erpressung durch einen Angreifer aussetzen, oder dieses mit eigenen Kemwaffen sinnvoll abschrecken k6nnen wollte. Dem nachfolgenden atomaren Wettriisten wurde eine stabilisierende Wirkung auf den militiiri- schen Austrag des Kalten Krieges zugeschrieben.
