Every major genocide of the twentieth century followed the same sequence. First, the government passed laws requiring the registration of privately owned firearms. Then it used those registration records to confiscate the weapons. Then it killed the people it had disarmed.
This is not a theory. It is the historical record.
In Ottoman Turkey, the Armenian population was disarmed in 1914. The genocide began in 1915. Between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians were dead before it ended. In Nazi Germany, the Weimar Republic's 1928 firearms registration law created the list the Nazi government inherited in 1933 and used to disarm the Jewish population before Kristallnacht and the Holocaust. In the Soviet Union, a disarmament decree issued in 1918 created the conditions under which the Ukrainian Holodomor killed between 3.5 and 7.5 million people and the Great Purge killed 750,000 more. In Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge confiscated weapons on the morning they arrived in April 1975 and spent the next four years killing approximately one quarter of the entire Cambodian population. In Rwanda, fifteen years of differential firearms licensing left the Tutsi population defenseless when the Interahamwe began the machete massacres that killed 800,000 people in 100 days. In China, the administrative disarmament of the 1950s created the conditions under which the Great Leap Forward famine killed between 30 and 45 million people.
R.J. Rummel spent five decades counting what governments did to their own people in the twentieth century. His research found that governments killed approximately 262 million of their own citizens - more than died in all the wars of that century combined. Every major case followed the same first step.
They came for the guns first.
This book traces the complete historical record - the specific laws, the specific confiscation orders, the specific timelines, the specific death tolls - across six governments and six populations. It examines the cases where armed resistance changed the outcomes: the defense of Musa Dagh, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Bielski partisans, the Deacons for Defense. It documents the registration trap - the specific mechanism by which firearms registration systems built by democratic governments become confiscation tools in the hands of successor governments. And it connects the complete historical record to the founding framework of the Second Amendment - the specific statements of Madison, Mason, Henry, and Jefferson establishing that the founders understood this pattern from their own experience and encoded the Second Amendment into the Constitution specifically to interrupt it.
The gun control debate has been conducted for decades at an altitude where this historical record is never visible. This book descends to ground level. The evidence is in the archives. The death tolls are in the demographic research. The legislative sequences are in the government records. The survivors testified. The founders warned.
The reader who finishes this book will possess the specific historical knowledge that the gun control debate has always been designed to exclude - and will never be able to engage the disarmament argument again without the full weight of the twentieth century's evidence behind them.
