About The Author

King, Damian: - Ifirst heard the phrase "Let's hit the grass" in the late 1970s. At that time, I was an apprentice boilermaker at the Ordnance Factory Bendigo (now Thales vehicle manufacturing site) and I was a member of the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union ("AMWU"). The phrase was shorthand for a trade union member believing union members should be going on strike.In 1981, I became an AMWU shop steward at the Ordnance Factory and in 1989, I was elected to the full-time position of state organiser with the AMWU. From the 1980s to the early 1990s, union members I represented made the decision to "hit the grass" and go on strike whenever no other solution to a significant problem could be found.From 1993 this started to change and over the last 33 years the ability for working people to take industrial action has been progressively and massively restricted. In fact, a group of workers going on strike today is a rare event that involves a narrowly focused and highly legalistic process. It now takes many weeks for workers to take "protected industrial action".This work looks at the changes that have occurred in relation to the taking of industrial action, how these changes have occurred and what they have meant for working people. It does this through the perspective of my experiences as a trade union representative, particularly my time as a union organiser between 1989 and 2022.This experience has involved working as an AMWU organiser between 1989 and 2012 and working as a branch organiser with the Victorian Branch of the Electrical Trades Union ("ETU") between 2012 and 2022. In this 33-year period, I was involved in organising over 100 strikes and negotiating more than 400 Certified Enterprise Agreements at workplaces across country Victoria and the southern border area of NSW. In doing this, I also hope to provide some insights into the work of a trade union organiser and the workings of the industrial relation system in the period from the 1980s through to the start of the 2020s.
