In 2009, she defended a young man who was unconstitutionally jailed in the auditorium of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for exercising his First Amendment rights. That successful defense later led to her multiple award-winning novel, A Dry Hate, covering the time in Arizona history when a popular Sheriff jailed or "investigated" activists, brown people, and political opponents at will. Marshall has also authored both English and Spanish editions of A Rattler's Tale, Un Cuento de Una Serpiente de Cascabel in addition to Finding Zachariah in a Community Garden.
