Die Studie präsentiert eine umfassende Aktionsartenklassifikation für das Deutsche; einen Schwerpunkt bildet die Unterscheidung mehrerer Klassen stativer Verben. Aktionale Merkmale betreffen die Zeitstruktur eines Verbdenotats und sind, anders als aspektuelle Unterscheidungen, Teil der Verbsemantik. Bei ihrer Ermittlung werden wortbildungsmorphologische, syntaktische und pragmatische Faktoren berücksichtigt.

Prozessverben lassen sich zu Ereignisausdrücken erweitern und sind daher zentral für kompositionale Phänomene. Die Ereignisverben werden anhand der Merkmale 'telisch' und 'durativ' in vier Klassen eingeteilt, wobei der Einfluss dieser Merkmale auf verschiedene Bereiche der Grammatik aufgezeigt wird. Stative Verben bezeichnen unteilbare Sachverhalte und sind resistent gegen kompositionale Effekte. Nur stative Verben mit Situationsbezug treten als AcI-Infinitive auf und erlauben mit einer indefiniten Subjekt-NP eine existentielle Satzlesart. Wie telische Ausdrücke implizieren Intransformativa einen Vergleich zweier Zeitpunkte; Aussagen über das Ausbleiben eines Ereignisses sowie bleiben-Passiv-Konstruktionen lassen sich nur dann adäquat beschreiben, wenn man sie von vornherein als intransformativ betrachtet. Nachgewiesen wird auch, dass sich der Einfluss der Aktionsarten auf das sein-Passiv nicht auf den Gegensatz zwischen telischen und atelischen Basis-VPn reduzieren lässt.
