Er überschreitet Gattungs- und 'Epochen'-Grenzen zwischen Frühaufklärung und Spätromantik und rekonstruiert auf breiter literarischer und nicht-literarischer Quellenbasis die denk- und wissensgeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen der Literatur der europäischen Aufklärung. Titzmann geht sowohl von einzelnen Autorenoeuvres (Wieland, Klinger, Goethe, Schiller, Eichendorff u. v. a.) als auch von literaturübergreifenden Diskursen aus und fragt nach den Beziehungen zwischen Literatur und (Popular-)Philosophie, Theologie, Medizin, Anthropologie und Jurisprudenz. Aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven wird transparent, wie Literatur 'Wissen' über Natur und Gesellschaft diskursi-viert, inszeniert und transformiert, also z.B. die Konstruktion von Emotionalität und Affektivität, von Familie und Sexualität (Inzest, Pornographie), von Altersklassen und von Staat und Politik verhandelt. Literaturanthropologie erweist sich für Michael Titzmann als nachhaltiges kulturwissenschaftliches Forschungsprogramm, das Sozialgeschichte als Diskurs- und Wissensgeschichte begreift.
