Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts richtete sich das Interesse der Altertumswissenschaft erstmals auf die auffallend häufigen Kinderdarstellungen in der hellenistischen Kunst und Literatur. Infolge der zunehmenden Spezialisierung und Abgrenzung der Fachdisziplinen voneinander blieben seitdem die Thesen Hans Herters und Wilhelm Kleins unwidersprochen, die das Phänomen mit einer Hinwendung des hellenistischen Menschen zur Familie als Kompensation für den "Verlust der Polis" oder aber mit einer epochenspezifischen Tendenz zur Parodie (besonders bei den Darstellungen kindlicher Götter und Helden) begründeten. Aktuelle Ergebnisse der verschiedenen Altertumswissenschaften (Polisforschung, Archäologie der Votiv- und Sepulkralkunst, Villenforschung, Ägyptologie) fordern jedoch dringend eine Neuinterpretation der relevanten Texte der hellenistischen Literatur von philologischer Seite. Diese können nicht länger einseitig als Dokumente epochenspezifischer Sentimentalität, selbstironischer "Dekonstruktion" oder metapoetischen Sendungsbewu tseins gelesen werden. Eine besondere Betrachtung verdient die Gestalt des Kindgottes Eros, der bei Apollonios Rhodios ebenso wie in der Epigrammatik eine zentrale Rolle spielt.
