Als Dekret von Kanopos werden zwei zu einem einzigen Text vereinigte Beschlüsse einer ägyptischen Priestersynode bezeichnet, die diese 238 v. Chr. in Kanopos (in der Nähe Alexandrias) zu Ehren Ptolemaios' III. und Berenikes II. und der verstorbenen Prinzessin Berenike verabschiedet hat. Das Dekret sollte nach dem Willen der Synodalen inschriftlich in allen ägyptischen Tempeln bekannt gemacht werden, und zwar in hieroglyphischer, demotischer und griechischer Schrift. Der vorliegenden Bearbeitung geht es um eine historische Analyse dieses wichtigen Dokumentes der frühen Ptolemäerzeit. Die Grundlage hierzu bildet die gleichberechtigte Auswertung aller drei Sprachen in Form eines Abschnittskommentars. Im Zentrum der Auswertung steht dann einerseits die Analyse der im Dekret beschriebenen Bewältigung einer Ägypten drohenden Hungersnot, andererseits wird der mittels des Dekretes von den Priestern in die ägyptischen Tempel eingeführte Herrscherkult untersucht. Es soll dargelegt werden, wie das Dekret letztlich das ganz eindeutige Bemühen der beschlie enden Priester zeigt, den König und seine Familie in die Religion der Ägypter einzubinden; dies sollte durch die Aufnahme der Regenten als ägyptische Gottheiten in den regelmä igen Festvollzug und die Vergöttlichung der verstorbenen Tochter Berenike perpetuiert werden.
