Das weit über die Grenzen der Theologie hinaus bekannte Hauptwerk des Alttestamentlers und Palästinawissenschaftlers Gustaf Dalman (1855-1941), Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina, erschien ab 1928 in verschiedenen Verlagen und hat seitdem mehrere Neuauflagen erlebt. Das Werk verschafft einen Einblick in das vorindustrielle, traditionelle Alltagsleben der arabischen Bewohner Palästinas um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Dalman hat damit ein umfassendes Dokument der Volks- und Landeskunde verfa t, das auch zur Erhellung der biblischen Texte beigetragen hat.
Der achte und letzte Band des Werkes konnte von Dalman nicht mehr ganz fertiggestellt werden. Der Verlag Walter de Gruyter legt hier erstmals in einer Edition des Gustaf-Dalman-Instituts in Greifswald den bislang unveröffentlichten letzten Band von Dalmans berühmter kulturgeschichtlicher Palästinastudie vor. Der Band enthält neben dem von Dalman verfassten Text über Geburt, Kindererziehung, das häusliche Leben und das Lebensende im Palästina nach der Jahrhundertwende erstmals ein komplettes Literaturverzeichnis zu allen Bänden, ebenso ein Gesamtregister zu den Bänden I-VIII, bestehend aus Sachregister, Bibelstellenregister und - neu - Register der rabbinischen Zitate. Ein ausführlicher Bildteil enthält Fotografien, die zumeist von Dalman selbst aufgenommen wurden. Die Fotografien des Bildteils illustrieren den vorgelegten Band VIII in seinen behandelten Aspekten.
