Der Briefwechsel zwischen Goethe und Zelter in den Jahren 1799 bis 1832 wurde lange Zeit vor allem wegen seines 'menschlichen Wertes' geschätzt. Im Vergleich mit dem Schillerbriefwechsel und den "Gesprächen mit Eckermann" galt er dagegen als intellektuell und künstlerisch unbedeutend. Die vorliegende Quellenstudie versucht eine Neubewertung des umfangreichen und vielseitigen Konvolutes, indem sie es als autobiographischen und anthropologischen Text ernst nimmt. Das Thematische und Ästhetische der Briefe wird nicht vorausgesetzt, sondern konsequent aus der eigenen Rationalität dieser auf den ersten Blick eigentümlichen, aber gelungenen Freundschaft der beiden ungleichen Männer entwickelt. Dabei zeigt sich, mit welcher Originalität, Folgerichtigkeit und Bewu theit beide Partner die Korrespondenz als Form sui generis in ihrem Sinne ausprägen, wie sie ihre so unterschiedlichen Briefe als Sprach- und Lebenskunst zugleich begreifen. Schon früh, nach Schillers Tod 1805 und den historischen Umwälzungen des Jahres 1806, pflegen die Freunde den Briefwechsel als Metapher des eigenen Lebens, als dialogische Autobiographik, als ironisch-distanzierte Zeitzeugenschaft. Mit einer Kette weiterer gemeinsam bewältigter Todesfälle in der nächsten Umgebung und der Erfahrung fortschreitenden Alters nehmen diese Merkmale des Briefwechsels zu. Mitte der zwanziger Jahre beschlie en Goethe und Zelter die posthume Veröffentlichung der vollständigen Korrespondenz und machen sie (von nun an im Blick auf den eigenen Tod schreibend) zum erregenden Dokument eines anthropologischen Selbstversuchs: Die Summe der einzelnen Briefe soll ihre latente Folgerichtigkeit offenlegen, die Masse der zufälligen Lebenszeugnisse sich wieder zum 'Leben' zusammenfügen. Die Frage nach der natürlichen Grundlage von Sprache und Schrift, nach der Möglichkeit, Biologie in Biographie zu verwandeln, bildet den Höhepunkt eines Briefwechsels, der sich von Anfang an selbst thematisierte.
