Die Studie geht den vielfältigen Bezugnahmen auf das antike Griechentum in Literatur und Kultur, dem Bildungswesen und den Altertumswissenschaften nach, die das deutsche Nationalbewusstsein 1890-1933/34 beeinflussten. Diese besondere Art der Identitätsstiftung wird als "Dritter Humanismus" bezeichnet und über Varianten rekonstruiert, wie sie vom Altphilologen Werner Jaeger, dem Bildungsphilosophen Eduard Spranger und dem Lyriker Stefan George vertreten wurden. Insgesamt betrachtet, lä t er sich als eine ganzheitliche, nationalpädagogische Strömung in Reaktion auf die Modernekritik in der Nachfolge Nietzsches begreifen. Auf der Basis eines vitalistisch verstandenen Griechentums sollte durch Amalgamierung ästhetischer, kulturkritischer und politischer Überlegungen neuer Sinn für die Gegenwart und ein künftiges "Deutschtum" entstehen. Eine humanistische Bildungskonzeption vermittelte individuelle wie nationale Identität.
Dabei griff der "Dritte Humanismus" zurück auf bewährte Denkmuster der Zeit um 1800, stellte aber auch Anknüpfungsmöglichkeiten für die nationalsozialistische Kultur- und Bildungspolitik bereit. Damit gehört er sowohl in die Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte der Weimarer Klassik als auch in die mentale Vorgeschichte des "Dritten Reichs".
