Bisher ist die Beziehung Else Lasker-Schülers zu ihrer letzten Lebensstation Palästina in der Regel unter dem Aspekt einer Diskrepanz zwischen verklärender Dichtung und ernüchternder Realität gesehen worden. Die vorliegende Studie geht die Frage von einer anderen Sichtweise her an: Zunächst wird die Ambivalenz von Sehnsucht und Furcht aufgezeigt, die sich aus Else Lasker-Schülers Äu erungen jeweils schon vor ihren Reisen in den Jahren 1934, 1937 und zuletzt 1939 ablesen lassen. Hinzu kommt, da sie das Land selbst als Ort der Transgression, d.h. in der Dynamik des Übergangs zwischen verschiedenen Polen (Himmel/Erde, Bibel/Moderne, Jüdisches Dasein in der Diaspora/Politische Autonomie), wahrnimmt. Zugleich setzt Palästina eine intensive Auseinandersetzung der Dichterin mit dem eigenen literarischen Rollenspiel und der in ihrer früheren Dichtung zentralen Selbstmetaphorisierung frei. Anstelle der Mischfigur "Jussuf" (einer Verfremdung des biblischen Joseph), die gro enteils ihre frühere Dichtung und Selbstdarstellung geprägt hat, gewinnt zusehends der König David an Bedeutung, welcher der jüdischen Tradition zufolge nicht nur Stadtvater von Jerusalem, sondern auch Vorfahre des erlösenden Messias ist. So schafft sie in der 'Urheimat' Palästina in den Jahren der Auslöschung der europäischen Judenheit eine neue Definition des Heimatbegriffs: Heimat nicht primär als Ort des persönlichen Ursprungs, sondern als Erfüllungsbereich einer letzten Erwartung.
