In unmittelbarer Nähe zu den Protagonisten erlebt Schiller so Aufstieg und Fall des Illuminatenbundes. Die Folgen für den Komplex des "Don Karlos" werden hier zum erstenmal umfassend dargelegt. Das Beispiel der Illuminaten sorgt für die Umorientierung des Sujets, die neue Führungsrolle des Marquis Posa, die Philosophie der Menschenrechte - aber auch für den Absturz ihres Verfechters in einen 'Despotismus der Aufklärung', den die "Briefe über Don Karlos" denkwürdig schroff an den Pranger stellen. In der Debatte um die Illuminaten formieren sich Positionen, die Schiller angesichts der Französischen Revolution aufnehmen wird. Die illuminatische Herausforderung begegnet ihm erneut, als der Prinz von Augustenburg und dessen Vertrauter Jens Baggesen an ihn herantreten.
