Ein halbes Jahrhundert war Bonn Sitz von Bundesregierung und Bundestag, ein halbes Jahrhundert war die Mittelstadt am Rhein Hauptstadt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Zunächst ging der Bund mit seinem Sitz möglichst sparsam um: Jeder Regierungsbau wurde als Bau gegen Berlin gewertet, weshalb man Bonn die ersten zwei Jahrzehnte genauso provisorisch ausbaute wie auch die Bundesrepublik gedacht war. Erst mit Verfestigung der Blöcke und dem Wandel der Ostpolitik wurde Bonn zur Hauptstadt ausgebaut. Später, in den achtziger Jahren, kamen mit ambitionierten Kulturbauten auch regelrechte Hauptstadtinsignien dazu. Parallel verlor West-Berlin für die Bundesrepublik immer stärker seine Rolle als Vorposten der Demokratie und als Hauptstadt im Wartestand.

Jens Krüger arbeitet erstmals die Finanzierung der Bundeshauptstadt als Spiegelbild des bundesrepublikanischen Selbstverständnisses auf und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Hauptstadtgeschichte sowie zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik.
