Das Erziehungsprogramm des Philanthropismus, des wesentlichsten und folgenreichsten Zweigs der deutschen Aufkl�rungsp�dagogik, steht am Anfang der modernen Bildungsreform: Bereits vor dem Erscheinen von Rousseaus Emile postulierten die philanthropischen P�dagogen Johann Bernhard Basedow, Johann Andreas Cramer und Martin Ehlers eine auf die Natur der Kinder abgestimmte Erziehung, die die jungen Menschen schon fr�hzeitig mittels eines freundschaftlichen und sinnlich-spielerischen Anschauungsunterrichts zu m�ndigen Weltb�rgern heranbilden sollte. Nahezu unbekannt ist, da die ideengeschichtlichen Anf�nge des Philanthropismus im p�dagogischen Diskurs der ab 1715 einsetzenden hamburgischen Fr�haufkl�rung zu suchen sind und da die philanthropische P�dagogik schon seit den 1750er Jahren von Basedow und Ehlers im d�nischen Gesamtstaat in der Schulpraxis erprobt wurde. Die Studie beschreibt diese bisher wenig beachtete Fr�hgeschichte des Philanthropismus im Detail und auf der Grundlage umfangreicher archivalischer Quellenstudien, indem ideengeschichtliche und sozialgeschichtliche Aspekte stets neu aufeinander bezogen und miteinander verwoben werden. Dabei wird im Ergebnis ersichtlich, da die von Basedow und Cramer konzipierte philanthropische P�dagogik ihrem innersten Wesen nach eine theologisch motivierte Erziehung zur religi�sen Toleranz war.
