Die Arbeit befa t sich mit den 23 zwischen 1540 ( Gramática da língua portuguesa von João de Barros) und 1822 ( Gramática filosófica da língua portuguesa von Jerónimo Soares Barbosa) erschienenen portugiesischen Grammatiken, die eine vollständige und systematische Beschreibung der Wortarten enthalten und nicht ausschlie lich an ein fremdsprachiges Publikum gerichtet sind.

Der erste Teil enthält eine chronologische Auflistung aller behandelten Werke mit bio-bibliographischen Angaben. Es folgen ein Überblick über den historischen Hintergrund im genannten Zeitraum (Politik und Kulturgeschichte, Geschichte der Institutionen) sowie Informationen zur portugiesischen Sprachgeschichte und allgemein zur Grammatikgeschichte.

Im Hauptteil wird ein systematischer Vergleich der Grammatiken hinsichtlich folgender Textbestandteile vorgenommen: Intention und Zielpublikum, Teile der Grammatik, Grammatikdefinitionen, Auffassungen von Sprache, Beschreibung der Wortarten und Syntax. Der Struktur der Grammatiken gemä liegt dabei der quantitative Schwerpunkt auf der Klassifikation der Wortarten aus einer Meta-meta-Perspektive.

Bei dem chronologischen Vergleich der Textbestandteile wird besonders der Frage nach möglichen Quellen nachgegangen. Es zeigt sich, da zunächst Spanien sowohl in der lateinischen (Pastrana, Nebrija, Sanctius) als auch in der volkssprachlichen (Nebrija) Grammatik die Modelltexte liefert. Ab dem 18. Jahrhundert gewinnt der französische Einflu immer stärker an Bedeutung und erreicht um 1800 mit einer intensiven Rezeption der Grammaire Générale seinen Höhepunkt. Als ein Spezifikum der frühneuzeitlichen portugiesischen Grammatikschreibung erweist sich der häufige Rückgriff auf universalistische Theorien, mit denen die Vermittlung der muttersprachlichen Grammatik als Vorbereitung auf den Lateinunterricht gerechtfertigt wird.
