Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) greift mit seinen kleineren Texten frühneuhochdeutsche Textsorten auf, deren Formelgut er gezielt in seinem Interesse oder spielerisch einsetzt. Anders als man sie zumeist verstanden hat, sind die Texte daher nicht ohne weiteres als Quellen für Dürers Persönlichkeit lesbar. Allerdings fallen die Spannungen zwischen den Selbstaussagen in Dürers Texten zu gro aus, als da sie sich allein von unterschiedlichen Textfunktionen her erklären lie en: Handwerker oder Herr, arm oder geschäftstüchtig, gefeiert oder bedroht vom Vergessen. Ein Erklärungsansatz liegt darin, die kleineren Texte Dürers als typisches Aufsteigerphänomen zu verstehen: Dürer hat mit dem Hineinwachsen in eine neue gesellschaftliche Position und mit der Aneignung neuer Bildungswelten eben auch mehr als andere mit Widersprüchen zwischen eigenem Herkommen und neuem Selbstbewu tsein zu tun, und diese kommen in den kleineren Texten ganz unterschiedlich zur Sprache. Das vorgestellte Textcorpus kann im Zusammenhang der Ausweitung von Schriftlichkeit in der frühen Neuzeit als Modellfall verstanden werden, an dem sich die Bedingungen für die Durchsetzung schriftlicher und literarischer Tätigkeit am Übergang von Bildungs- und Gesellschaftsschichten um 1500 studieren lassen.
