Diese Studie zeigt, da die mittelalterliche Gesellschaft offener war, als früher angenommen. Mobilität war insbesondere für das späte Mittelalter konstitutiv. Ohne schnelle Kommunikations- und Reisemittel fiel es den transalpinen Immigranten allerdings schwer, von Italien aus Kontakt zur alten Heimat zu halten, was ihre Akkulturation beförderte.

Anhand eines Tableaus nord- und mittelitalienischer Aufnahmestädte werden Wege und Konjunkturen der Zuwanderung sichtbar gemacht sowie einzelne Migrantengruppen und Faktoren der Inklusion oder Exklusion untersucht. Die Ergebnisse dieser weiten Vogelschau werden in einer quellennahen Mikrostudie am Beispiel der im Einzugsbereich Venedigs gelegenen Stadt Treviso vertieft. Kriminal- und Notarsakten werden dabei ebenso ausgewertet wie Steuerschätzungen und Taufregister.

Bei näherer Betrachtung zeigt sich, da die "Fremden aus dem Norden" nicht "fremder" waren als italienischsprachige Zuziehende aus anderen Orten der Apenninenhalbinsel auch - au er, da sie vielleicht nur gebrochen Italienisch sprachen. Wie diese konnten sie Bürger werden, wie diesen verwehrte man aber auch ihnen das Vordringen in angesehenere Tätigkeiten und Ämter, die den alteingesessenen Familien vorbehalten blieben. Von einer multikulturellen Idylle kann also nicht die Rede sein. Gleichwohl wurden die Zuwanderer weder räumlich separiert noch sozial marginalisiert.
