Die Gesamtausgabe der Schriften des Johann von Staupitz lä t dessen Bedeutung als Schlüsselfigur im Übergang von der spätmittelalterlichen Reform zur Reformation deutlich werden. Bislang nicht oder nur unzulänglich edierte Schriften werden erstmals in kritischer Edition zur Verfügung gestellt, verbunden mit wesentlichen neuen Ergebnissen der Forschung.

Da Staupitz in Salzburg zum Ketzer-Verfolger geworden sei, kann durch die Edition der Consultatio (1523) widerlegt werden. Durch Wiederauffindung der seit 1896 verschollenen Akten des Häresie-Verfahrens gegen Stephan Kastenpauer, genannt Agricola, kann der "Ratschlag" des seelsorgerlichen Theologen Staupitz in seinen Überlieferungszusammenhang eingeordnet, durch eingehende Kommentierung verständlich gemacht und der Verlauf des ungewöhnlichen Ketzerprozesses geklärt werden.

Auch die zwischen 1500 und 1517 sechsmal gedruckte Decisio - in welcher Staupitz, obwohl Mitglied eines Bettelordens, in dem Streit zwischen Mendikanten und Weltklerus um die Seelsorgerechte die Position der Pfarrgeistlichkeit vertrat - ist ein Zeugnis für sein "Interesse an pastoraler Wegweisung" (Wolfgang Günter). Der Franziskaner Kaspar Schatzgeyer und seine (noch ungedruckte) Gegenschrift haben wahrscheinlich die überraschende Entscheidung Leos X. über diese Sache beeinflu t.

In der sorgfältigen Edition und Kommentierung der Constitutiones der deutschen Reform-Kongregation der Augustiner-Eremiten - durch Staupitz mitgeprägt, verantwortet und (wohl 1506) promulgiert - wird nicht nur auf die noch unerforschten Konstitutionen der italienischen Reformkongregationen, sondern auch auf die Gründungszeit des Ordens und die Entstehung seiner Rechtsgestalt zurückgegriffen. Im Urteil von Kaspar Elm (Zum Geleit) ist dieser Vorgang nicht nur von Interesse für die Ordensforschung, sondern auch für alle Disziplinen, die sich mit Problemen der Institutionalisierung von unorganisierten Bewegungen befassen.
