Die Studie entfaltet eine Typologie der höfischen Maskeradenformen vom 15. bis 18. Jahrhundert in Deutschland. Sie unterscheidet vier Typen - Mummereien, Ritterspiele, Verkleidungsbankette und Maskenbälle -, die wiederum jeweils spezifische Spielformen aufweisen. Für die Erstellung der Maskeradentypologie wurden unterschiedliche Medien, darunter z.T. erstmals publizierte literarische und bildliche Festdokumentationen, Entwürfe, Archivalien, Tagebücher und Briefe, aber auch Gemälde, erhaltene Kostümierungen und Requisiten ausgewertet. Die Analyse konzentriert sich auf die sozialsymbolische Funktion der Maskeraden und zeigt auf, wie sich je nach dem repräsentativen Anspruch der Hofveranstaltung und dem Status der verschiedenen Teilnehmer aus einem breiten Spektrum von Verkleidungs- und Spielformen flexibel auswählen lie . Verkleidungsfeste boten den Teilnehmern unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten, das Hofzeremoniell in feinen Abstufungen zu reduzieren oder in neue Kommunikationssituationen zu überführen, ohne es jemals gänzlich aufzuheben. Maskeraden waren 'verkleidetes' Zeremoniell. Neben die Funktionsbestimmung der Maskeraden tritt die detaillierte Vorstellung der Ausstattungspraxis höfischer Verkleidungsfeste vom Entwurf über die Realisierung bis zur Aufbewahrung der verwendeten Kostümierungen. Am Beispiel des Dresdner Ausstattungsfundus, der im Stallgebäude verwahrt wurde, wird die ökonomisch bewu te Wiederverwendung von Textilien, Attrappen und Requisiten vorgestellt und das Forschungsklischee vom Fest als 'Kunst der Verschwendung' relativiert.
