Die Studie widmet sich erstmalig in breiter angelegter Form dem noch weitgehend unbekannten Würzburger Übersetzer Johann Sieder und dessen Übersetzung der Metamorphosen des Apuleius aus dem Jahr 1500, die dieser in Form einer Handschrift Johann von Dalberg widmete und somit seine Nähe zu einem Zentrum des frühen Humanismus in Deutschland, dem "Heidelberger Humanistenkreis", demonstrierte. Anhand dieser Handschrift, der Editio Princeps der Siederschen Übersetzung von 1538 sowie einem jüngeren Druck von 1605 werden nicht nur wichtige übersetzungstechnische und buchgeschichtliche Entwicklungen, sondern auch drei grundlegende Rezeptionsrichtungen dieses antiken Romans in exemplarischer Weise offenbar. Die vorliegende Studie stellt diese Befunde nicht nur dar, sondern macht sie vor dem Hintergrund der antiken und mittelalterlichen Traditionen der Metamorphosen -Rezeption verständlich. Zudem verfolgt sie die zum Teil auf Sieders Übersetzung fu ende deutsche Rezeption des Goldenen Esels bis zum Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts weiter, wobei drei Linien unterschieden werden, die schlie lich in Grimmelshausens simplicianischen Schriften gebündelt, neu akzentuiert und um eine weitere Dimension ergänzt werden, wodurch Apuleius' Metamorphosen eine gro e Bedeutung bei der Entwicklung des modernen deutschsprachigen Romans zukommt.
