Rey-Debove, pour qui le "Franz�sisches Etymologisches W�rterbuch" de Walther von Wartburg est "un ouvrage si complexe que la seule description de ses structures ferait l'objet d'un livre" (J. Rey-Debove, �tude linguistique et s�miotique des dictionnaires fran�ais contemporains, 1971, 28). L'approche retenue conjoint les acquis de la m�talexicographie et une r�flexion interne sur la m�thodologie de l'�tymologie, en se penchant tour � tour sur la superstructure, la macrostructure, la nomenclature et la microstructure du FEW. L'�tude syst�matique, qui met aussi en �vidence la diachronie interne de l'ouvrage, est compl�t�e par deux �tudes de cas. Dans la premi�re, une section de FEW, les �l�ments d'origine slave, est analys�e, corrig�e et compl�t�e. La seconde est constitu�e par une lecture transversale de l'oeuvre sous l'angle de la d�onomastique. L'ouvrage est compl�t� par des index raisonn�s mettant � jour les 'structures cach�es' du FEW (compl�ments et corrections aux volumes �tymologiques contenus dans les volumes consacr�s aux mat�riaux d'origine inconnue; index des �tymons onomatop�iques; concordance des sections des mat�riaux d'origine inconnue avec celles du Begriffssystem; index des �tymons cach�s; index des �ponymes).
