Der vorliegende Band macht mit der Edition der Catena aurea super Lucam den ersten gro en Schritt zur Gesamtedition der ostmitteldeutschen Übersetzung der Catena aurea des Thomas von Aquin. Ihre Bedeutung kann kaum überschätzt werden, handelt es sich doch bei dem Lukaskommentar, soweit bisher bekannt ist, um das einzige aus dem Spätmittelalter überlieferte Exemplar. Die Überlieferung in einer Prachthandschrift zeugt bereits von ihrem herausragenden Stellenwert im 14. Jahrhundert. Das Bemühen des Übersetzers um die korrekte Wiedergabe der lateinischen Vorlage, sein Streben, den Leser/Hörer unmittelbar einzubeziehen und zu belehren sowie seine formale Systematik treten in der Ausgabe so deutlich zutage, wie Übereinstimmungen und gravierende Abweichungen vom lateinischen Werk in der Edition vermerkt sind. Damit die Eigenheiten der Catena sichtbar sind, wird der Text möglichst authentisch wiedergegeben, Normalisierungen und Modernisierungen werden weitgehend vermieden, auch die Willkür und Inkonsequenz der Handschrift wird nicht angetastet. Die durch Blattverlust bedingten Lücken in der Handschrift sind im edierten Text durch das lateinische Werk, durch Rekonstruktion und durch die Melker Evangelien geschlossen.
