Relevant wird die entsprechende Form der Identit�tsbestimmung dort, wo rezeptionsgeschichtliche Entt�uschungen, der Einbruch der Revolutionskriege in Deutschland und generelle Einsichten in die Partikularisierung des modernen Wissens und der Gesellschaft zu einer Ersch�tterung der fr�hen universalistischen Emphase f�hren. Die untersuchten kunsttheoretischen Schriften und Dichtungen von Schelling, Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben und Eichendorff reflektieren die Einsicht in die eigene Minorit�t und deuten sie in Formen, die f�r die gesamte moderne Kunst wegweisend sind (Avantgardestilisierung; �sthetizismus; Anschlu der Kunst an positive gesellschaftliche Gr� en wie Staat, Kirche). Um der konnotativen F�lle der romantischen Schriften gerecht zu werden, setzt die Arbeit in der Antike ein und analysiert dort Schriften Platons, der Neuplatoniker und christlicher Denker, die das Sprachfeld Mysterien als Symbolkomplex erschlossen haben. Anschlie end werden die unmittelbaren Voraussetzungen der Romantik betrachtet: Denn schon in der Sp�taufkl�rung - und hier wird ausf�hrlich auf das Werk Wielands eingegangen - kommt es zur Reflexion der problematischen Identit�t als Intellektueller in der Moderne, geraten die Idee einer m�glichen Einheit der Gesellschaft und der universalistische Wahrheitsbegriff ins Wanken. Die Arbeit ist ideen- und sozialgeschichtlich ausgerichtet. Sie nimmt Bezug auf die (oft apologetischen) Forschungen zu einer Neuen Mythologie in der Romantik, thematisiert Probleme einer autonom werdenden Kunst und ist auch als Beitrag zu einer Geschichte der Intellektuellen in der Moderne lesbar.
