Johann Arndt (1555-1621), ein zu seiner Zeit zwar berühmter, aber nicht unumstrittener lutherischer Erbauungsschriftsteller, greift in seinem Werk auf verschiedene naturphilosophische und mystische Traditionen zurück, um die Streittheologie seiner Zeit hin zu einer Reformation christlicher Lebenspraxis zu überwinden.

Die naturphilosophischen Implikationen von Arndts Schriften haben in der bisherigen Forschung jedoch kaum Beachtung gefunden. Daher untersucht vorliegende Arbeit hauptsächlich den naturphilosophischen Hintergrund Johann Arndts. Dabei geben insbesondere die frühen Schriften Arndts Aufschlu über dessen Rezeption diverser naturphilosophischer Strömungen des 15./16. Jahrhunderts. Dazu gehören sowohl der Neuplatonismus in der Prägung des Florentiner Philosophen Marsilio Ficino, als auch Pico della Mirandolas Theologia poetica , Paracelsus' Philosophia Magna , der nach letzterem benannte Paracelsismus und Heinrich Khunraths mystisch-theosophische Alchemie. Darüber hinaus wird die Frage aufgeworfen, inwiefern sich die bei Arndt vorfindlichen und von ihm verwerteten mystischen Quellen mit seinen naturphilosophischen und theologischen Ansichten vereinbaren lassen. Mit einer systematischen Darstellung des Zusammenhangs von Naturphilosophie und Mystik in der frühen Neuzeit schlie t vorliegende Studie, um damit einen Themenkomplex zu erschlie en, der für das Verständnis des religiösen Denkens und Fühlens der frühen Neuzeit unerlä lich ist.
