Um sie angemessener verstehen und historisch gewichten zu lernen, waren Ort und Zeit ihrer Entstehung neu zu befragen - eine Zeit, welche ein jahrhundertumspannender, Politik, Kirche, literarisches Leben und Öffentlichkeit permanent erregender Moraldiskurs prägt. Die in ein veritables Moral(isierungs)theater mündende Sittenkomödie ist ihr theatraler Beitrag, der in Alexandre Dumas fils, dem Propagandisten eines "nützlichen Theaters", seinen hervorragensten Repräsentanten gefunden hat. Da Dumas fils und Offenbach nicht nur auf privater, sondern auch auf ideeller Ebene mehr verband als bisher vermutet, soll mit paradigmatischen Stücken belegt werden. Fünf frühe Einakter sind ausgewählt, auf die moralische Disposition im Offenbachschen Schaffen aufmerksam zu machen. Den Kern der Untersuchung bildet jedoch die Zusammenschau von fünf gro en Werken, opéras bouffes von Orphée bis Barbe-Bleue , mit denen auf seiten einer fortschrittlichen Moral und konzeptionell progredierend in den Moraldiskurs eingegriffen wird.
