Die Beschäftigung mit Otto Jahn reicht in die Anfänge meiner Banner Studienzeit zurück. Sein Por- trät in Wolfgang Schmids Direktorenzimmer und ge- legentliche Bücherfunde in der Seminarbibliothek mit dem Jahnschen Exlibris von Ludwig Richter erschie- nen dem Studenten als Spuren der Geschichtsträch- tigkeit des gewählten Studienortes. Der philologische Lehrbetrieb - traditionsbewu t und gediegen - bot wenig Anla zu Enthusiasmus; um so bereitwilliger erwärmte man sich bei dem Gedanken, da hier einst Nietzsche und Wilamowitz studiert hatten. Den gro en Streit aus nichtigem Anla zwischen Jahn und Ritschl, den die Professoren noch immer als Makel der Semi- nargeschichte zu betrachten schienen (man sprach lieber von Usener und Bücheler), las ich in der Darstellung von Otto Ribbecks Ritschl-Biographie. Was Wunder, da ich ein Ritschlianer war. Sich mit Nietzsche im gleichen Lager zu wähnen war nicht unangenehm. Schmid äu erte beiläufig seine Sympa- thie für das Paradoxon, da der Genialische nicht dem av p !LOUdLx6, sondern dem Meister der philo- logisch-kritischen Methode gefolgt war. Nachdenk- 11 lichkeit stellte sich erst Jahre später ein, als ich beim Lesen von Nietzsches Briefen entdeckte, da er in Bonn durchaus ein Anhänger J ahns gewesen und seine Übersiedlung nach Leipzig, wo Ritschl ihn als Banner Getreuen begrü te, aus ganz äu erlichen Gründen erfolgt war. Aber den eigentlichen Ansto , Jahn Ge- rechtigkeit widerfahren zu lassen, gab die Lektüre seines Briefwechsels mit Mommsen während eines Aufenthalts im Deutschen Archäologischen Institut in Rom (Herbst 1985).
