Die Komödien des Aristophanes wurden erst spät ins Deutsche übersetzt. Als Rezeptionshindernis erwies sich neben ihrer dramaturgischen Form, die mit neuzeitlichen Theaterkonventionen unvereinbar war, vor allem die Fülle unverständlicher Anspielungen auf Verhältnisse und Personen des Athener Lebens und der obszöne Witz. Die erste deutsche Ausgabe sämtlicher überlieferter Stücke erschien 1821; ihr Autor war Johann Heinrich Vo , der berühmte Homer-Übersetzer. Als der Historiker Johann Gustav Droysen 1835/38 eine neue deutsche Gesamtübersetzung vorlegte, trat er damit ausdrücklich gegen Vo an und stellte sich zugleich in den Zusammenhang des wachsenden, meist politisch motivierten Interesses an Aristophanes in der Zeit des Vormärz.
Die vorliegende Untersuchung fragt einerseits nach Droysens Stellung zur klassizistischen Übersetzungstradition, die sich mit dem Namen Vo verbindet, andererseits nach Droysens Verhältnis zur Aristophanes-Auffassung des Vormärz und zu den dazugehörenden Übersetzungsprinzipien. Sie versteht sich in erster Linie als Arbeit zur Geschichte des literarischen Übersetzens, berücksichtigt aber auch rezeptionsgeschichtliche Aspekte und will schlie lich einen Beitrag zur Kenntnis Droysens leisten, dessen historisches Denken in den drei iger Jahren wesentliche Impulse erhielt.
