Sp�testens seit Michael Bachtins Lekt�re stellt Fran�ois Rabelais (1494-1553) eine zentrale Referenz f�r die literarturwissenschaftliche Theoriebildung dar. Der Verfasser der ab 1532 erscheinenden Pentalogie erscheint als Autor von faszinierender Modernit�t, als Ahnherr von Intertextualit�t, Selbstreferenz oder Dekonstruktion. Solcherart Etiketten haben allerdings nur den Methodenstreit bef�rdert, so da zahllose Fragen, die Rabelais Romanwerk stellt, von der Forschung unbeantwortet sind. Exemplarisch l� t sich das am "Gargantua" zeigen. Schwierigkeiten bereiten dort u.a. die Abschlu kapitel mit der Beschreibung einer imagin�ren Architektur. Die Funktion der hier greifbaren mnemotechnischen Verfahren wird nicht ansatzweise erkannt.
Die vorliegende Arbeit verfolgt daher das Ziel, den Blick weg von modernen Identifikationen zu lenken, um die historische Differenz eines zeitlich fernen wie habituell fremden Literaturkonzepts paradigmatisch sichtbar zu machen, dessen Funktion Literatur als Lebensf�hrung benennt. Sie beschreitet dazu ein von der Rabelais-Forschung weithin unbetretenes Gebiet: Der Text des 1534/5 publizierten Romans wird zum einen im mediengeschichtlichen und paradigmatischen Rahmen seiner Entstehungssituation gelesen. Mit dieser Kontextualisierung ist eine weitere methodische Option verbunden.
Die Kategorien der M�ndlichkeits-/Schriftlichkeitsforschung er�ffnen die M�glichkeit, pragmatische, mediale und materiale Faktoren in die Analyse einzubeziehen, die einem eng gefa ten Textbegriff entgehen. F�r den "Gargantua" hei t dies, da hier erstmals die literarische Relevanz von Praktiken des Lesens und Schreibens sowie der ihnen komplement�ren Techniken der kulturellen �bermittlung ins Blickfeld geraten. Dies betrifft vor allem die unter dem Begriff der Semi-Oralit�t gefa ten, f�r mediale �bergangssituationen typischen Rezeptions- und Produktionsformen von Literatur.
Nicht zuletzt wird ein altes Problem der Rabelais-Forschung gel�st: Die Studie weist erstmals den hohen Stellenwert der ars memorativa in der literarischen Konzeption nach und liefert damit einen Schl�ssel f�r den Bau der Abtei von Theleme.
