Der Band befa t sich mit der typologischen Beschreibung der Wortbildung am Beispiel denominaler Verben. Dabei wird hier Typologie als Erkenntnismethode allgemeiner und besonderer Eigenschaften konkreter Sprachen und menschlicher Sprache im Ganzen verstanden. Diese Methode wird zur Erforschung einzelner Subsysteme einer Sprache angewandt. Sie ermöglicht Schlu folgerungen, aus denen sich eine allgemeine Sprachtheorie formulieren lä t. Diese Forschungsrichtung jedoch lä t die Beschreibung vieler konkreter sprachlicher Erscheinungen vermissen, sie fehlt praktisch gänzlich in der Wortbildung.

Zu den wichtigsten Ergebnissen der vorliegenden Arbeit zählen der konzeptuelle Apparat und der Fragebogen zur Beschreibung denominaler Verben, welche beide auf dem Material von über 60 Sprachen erforscht wurden, sowie die interlingualen Verallgemeinerungen (Universalien) auf dem Gebiet der denominalen Verbbildung. Hauptschwerpunkte der Untersuchung sind die Bildungstypen denominaler Verben, ihre semantischen Typen und die Bedeutung der Derivationsarten. Ein wichtiges und wenig erforschtes Problem der modernen Wortbildungsforschung ist die Bestimmung und Voraussagbarkeit der von der Bedeutung des Basissubstantivs ausgehenden Semantik einer Ableitung. Die Arbeit enthält zudem ein typologisches Experiment, dessen Ziel es war, den Grad der Wortbildungsaktivität der Substantive bei der Bildung der Verben bezogen auf das dieser Untersuchung zugrunde gelegte Sprachmaterial zu bestimmen. Anschlie end werden die Systeme denominaler Verben in verschiedenen Sprachen nach bestimmten Kategorien klassifiziert.
