In dieser Arbeit werden die wesentlichen Züge der japanischen Sprache aus typologischer Sicht vorgestellt. Die wichtigsten typologischen Themen sind morphologische Charakterisierungen (Agglutination, analytisch/synthetisch u.ä.), Wortstellung, Kasusmarkierung, Head/Dependent-Marking und Pro-Drop. Japanisch entspricht einerseits dem Prototyp bekannter typologischer Bündel. So ist es eine der konsistentesten Sprachen, was die Wortstellung und die Kopf- vs. Dependens-Markierungstypologie betrifft. Andererseits geben die Daten Anla für kritische Überprüfungen bisheriger Versuche, typologische Zusammenhänge auszumachen und deren Erklärung funktional darzustellen. Dies betrifft vor allem die Bereiche Wortstellungsfreiheit, Kasusmarkierung, Topikalisierung, Diathese, Kongruenz bzw. Kopf-Markierung, Wegla barkeit von Satzgliedern bzw. Möglichkeit eines aus dem Prädikat allein bestehenden Satzes und Null-Anapher. Die Prinzipien, die den japanischen Typus prägen und aus denen die meisten typologischen, auch die morphologischen, Eigenschaften abgeleitet werden können, sind die Markierung der Dependenzrelation am Dependens und die Endstellung des Kopfes auf der morphosyntaktischen Seite und die Transpersonalität auf der referenzbezogenen Seite. In diesem Zusammenhang werden die Leistung der verbalen Deixis sowie Probleme der Flexionskategorien und Wortarten erörtert. Da die Kasusmarkierung ein Nomen als Dependens kennzeichnet und bei einem nominalen Kopf abwesend ist, gilt ein gro er Teil der Arbeit der Analyse der Kasusmarkierung.
