Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mi verständnisse und benachbarte interaktive Phänomene empirisch untersucht. Die Grundlage bildet ein auf der Sprechakttheorie aufbauendes Kommunikationsmodell. Dieses Modell ermöglicht es zum einen, vielen Fällen Ursachen eindeutig zuzuordnen, die meist im au ersprachlichen Kontext (etwa in dialektaler Differenz der Beteiligten oder in akustischen Störfaktoren) zu suchen sind. Zum anderen ermöglicht die Identifikation verschiedener Aspekte der Äu erungsfunktion, die jeweils vom Mi verstehen betroffen sind, eine Klassifikation von Mi verständnissen in drei Typen und mehrere Untertypen. Kommunikationsprobleme auf Grund nonverbaler Handlungen, die in ihrem interaktiven Ablauf mit sprachlichen Mi verständnissen vergleichbar sind, werden in die Überlegungen mit einbezogen. Die Analyse des Verhältnisses von Mi verständnissen zu Nachbarphänomenen wie Nichtverstehen und unbemerktem Mi verstehen führt darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, da vollständiges Verstehen aus linguistischer Sicht nicht nachweisbar ist und deshalb nicht als interaktive Realität, sondern lediglich als - wenngleich für die Kommunikation konstitutives - soziales Konstrukt angesehen werden kann. Das Beispielmaterial stammt zum grö eren Teil aus zeitgenössischen englischsprachigen Romanen und wird durch Fälle aus natürlicher Kommunikation ergänzt.
