Mit dem Vocabularius Ex quo hat das späte Mittelalter ein beispiellos erfolgreiches zweisprachiges Wörterbuch für das deutsche Sprachgebiet entwickelt. Entstanden um 1400 wohl im Oberweserraum, hat es sich rasch über alle deutschen Landschaften ausgebreitet und beherrscht als Nachschlagewerk das ganze 15. Jahrhundert: Mehr als 270 erhaltene Handschriften und über 50 Inkunabelauflagenn sind zwischen 1410 und 1505 überliefert.

Aus den lateinischen Summen des grammatischen und realen Wissens durch Reduktion der umfänglichen Erläuterungen zum knappen und erschwinglichen Handbuch für pauperes scolares geworden, kombiniert der Vocabularis Ex quo lateinisches Lemma, lateinische Sprach- oder Sacherklärung und deutsche Wortübersetzung zur präzisen Dokumentation fundamentalen Sach- und Sprachwissens, wie es vor allem für das Verständnis der Bibel benötigt wurde. Die weitere Geschichte des Vokabulars zeigt allerdings, da diese lateinisch-deutsche Grundinformation häufig so nicht für ausreichend oder angemessen angesehen wurde: Sie ist vor allem gekennzeichnet durch die formenreiche Wiedereingliederung lateinischen Wissensgutes. Das Vokabular stellt als sprachliches Handbuch des späten Mittelalters durch seine auf das 15. Jahrhundert konzentrierte dichte und weitgestreute Überlieferung und durch seine variable Textstruktur vielfältiges Material für wortgeschichtliche und wortgeographische Studien bereit; es macht in seinen textgeschichtlichen Veränderungen bildungsgeschichtliche Bewegungen sichtbar.

Die Edition, die auf 42 nach textgeschichtlicher Repräsentativität ausgewählten Textzeugen beruht und - basierend auf der Darstellungseinheit des Wortartikels - 8 Fassungen zeilensynoptisch darstellt, hat das Ziel, das Vokabular in seinen wichtigen Ausformungen so zu präsentieren, da der einzelne Beleg in seinem überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Stellenwert und seiner sprachgeographischen Position gedeutet werden kann. Der Einleitungsband bietet eine Einführung in den Vokabulartypus, einen Bericht über den Forschungsstand mitsamt einer Forschungsbibliographie zu Vokabularien und Wörterbüchern des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit, eine Gesamtübersicht zur Überlieferung in Kurzbeschreibungen, die Darstellung der textgeschichtlichen Verzweigung und die Begründung der Überlieferungsgliederung, die Darlegung der Editionsprinzipien und einen alphabetischen Index der mehr als 20.000 lateinischen Lemmata.
