Mit ca. 350.000 Jiddischsprechern bildeten die Warschauer Juden vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die grö te städtische Sprachgemeinschaft des Ostjiddischen in Europa. Aufgrund der Interviews mit den letzten Jiddischsprechern aus Warschau wird eine der wichtigsten Stadtvarietäten nicht nur festgehalten, sondern auch zum ersten Mal eingehend beschrieben.

Das Buch enthält in erster Linie eine synchrone Beschreibung der lautlichen Struktur des Warschauer Jiddisch anhand der linguistischen Analyse gesprochener Texte. Es besteht im wesentlichen aus zwei Teilen, einem deskriptiven und einem Materialteil. Der deskriptive Teil bietet au er der synchronen Beschreibung des Vokalismus und Konsonantismus der Mundart die Darstellung der Taxonomie der satzphonetischen Erscheinungen im gesprochenen Jiddisch, die ein völlig neues Gebiet in der Jiddischforschung berührt. Darüber hinaus werden typologische Fragen der jiddischen Morphosyntax im Hinblick auf die Zwischenstellung des Jiddischen zwischen dem Germanischen und dem Slawischen angesprochen. Den linguistisch-deskriptiven Kapiteln gehen Beiträge zur Geschichte und Soziolinguistik der jiddischen Sprachgemeinschaft in Warschau voraus. Im zweiten Teil des Buches sind zwei umfangreiche Textproben aus einem grö eren Korpus in vierfacher synoptischer Darstellung wiedergegeben: ein (satz)phonetisches IPA-Transkript, ein orthographischer jiddischer Text sowie ein deutscher und ein polnischer Paralleltext. Bei den letzteren handelt es sich nicht um standardsprachliche Texte, sondern um lexemgetreue, wörtliche Umsetzungen des Originaltextes, um die genetische und typologische Zugehörigkeit des Jiddischen zu seinen beiden Komponentensprachen zur Diskussion zu stellen.
