Die Beiträge dieses Bandes analysieren die vielschichtigen Prozesse dieser - oft wider besseres Wissen vollzogenen - Gleichsetzung und ihre politischen Konsequenzen.

Der Band bündelt die Erträge einer interdisziplinären Tagung, die vom 1. bis 3. Dezember 2000 in Freiburg veranstaltet wurde.

Heiko Steuer ist Professor für Ur- und Frühgeschichte an der Universität Freiburg/Breisgau. Heinrich Beck ist emeritierter Professor am Germanistischen Seminar, Abteilung Skandinavistik, an der Universität Bonn. Dieter Geuenich ist Leiter des Forschungsgebietes Personen- und Sozialgeschichte des Früh- und Hochmittelalters im Fachbereich Geschichte der Universität Duisburg/Essen. Dietrich Hakelberg ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte und Archäologie des Mittelalters der Universität Freiburg.
