De mens met autisme stelt de mens zonder autisme vaak voor vragen, en even zo vaak voor verrassingen. Voorzover bekend geldt dit omgekeerd ev- zeer: de autistische mens staat niet zelden voor raadsels als hij naar de 'gewone' wereld kijkt. Voor autisten zijn de 'anderen' niet of moeilijk te do- gronden en is de wereld, die immers voor het overgrote deel door 'niet-aut- ten' bepaald wordt, moeilijk te bevatten en vormt hij een riskante wildernis met voetangels, klemmen en duistere paadjes. Een (licht-)autistische man beschrijft de manier waarop hij de wereld ervaart met het volgende voorbeeld: 'De werkelijke oorzaak [van de stoornis autisme, MZ] . . . is mijns inziens p- ceptueel van aard. Ik heb in de loop van de jaren ontdekt dat mijn manier van waarnemen anders is dan de meeste andere mensen. Als er bijvoorbeeld een hamer op tafel ligt, dan zie ik in eerste instantie geen hamer, maar ik zie u- sluitend ongerelateerde onderdelen: een vierkant blok ijzer met in de onm- dellijke nabijheid een toevallige houten staaf. Direct daarna vindt de percep- ele integratie plaats tot iets wat op een hamer lijkt, en even later schiet zelfs het woord me te binnen. Weer een tijd later weet ik dat er iets mee gedaan kan worden: timmeren. . . ' (Van Dalen, 1994). Een dergelijk voorbeeld maakt duidelijk hoe ingewikkeld de waarneming van de wereld verloopt voor iemand met autisme en hoeveel tijd en aandacht het kost om dingen te begrijpen en er adequaat mee om te gaan.
