Ieh habe in der nun vorliegenden Auflage zwei Kapitel herausgenommen; einmal das Kapitel "Aufbau einer genetisehen Theorie", nieht weil ieh das dort AusgefUhrte heute nieht mehr aufreehthielte, sondern weil ieh es im Rahmen des Ganzen nieht fUr sehr wesentlieh halte und den Eindruek gewann, der mehrfaeh erhobene Vorwurf des Hypothetisehen meiner Uberlegungen griinde sieh vor- wiegend auf dieses Kapitel; zum andern das letzte Kapitel "Konstitutionstypus und EvolutionsprozeB", weil hier wirklieh - und deutlieh ausgesproehen - Hypo- thesen formuliert wurden. Aber wer kann Gedanken zur Phylogenese anders denn als Hypothesen formulieren ? Wie dem aueh sei, die beiden Kapitel konnten ohne Sehaden fUr das Ganze wegbleiben. DafUr gewannen wir Raum zur Einfiigung eines neuen Kapitels, das mir im gegebenen Zeitpunkt wiehtiger ersehien: Die praktisehe Bestimmung des Konstitutionstypus. Vieles andere muBte natiirlieh umgearbeitet und auf den neuesten Stand des Wissens gebraeht werden. So hat diese Neubearbeitung, naeh so langer Zeit, etwas von dem Sehwung der Jugend verloren. Sie wurde troekener und niiehterner. Zu vielem, was dem Autor vor 20 Jahren unbezweifelbar sehien, werden jetzt Zweifel angemerkt, die apodik- tisehe Sieherheit besteht nieht mehr. Aber den Grundgedanken halte ieh heute wie vor 20 Jahren fUr fruehtbar und kann hoffen, daB es mir dieses Mal besser ge- lang, diese Fruchtbarkeit auch fiir andere erkennbar zu machen.
