La teor�a de la gram�tica universal de Noam Chomsky surgi� no solo como una propuesta ling��stica, sino como una teor�a fundamentalmente psicol�gica de la mente humana. Desde sus inicios, el programa chomskiano busc� explicar el lenguaje como una facultad mental: un sistema interno con base biol�gica que se desarrolla en el individuo bajo condiciones de experiencia limitada e imperfecta. Con ello, desafi� los modelos empiristas y conductistas predominantes del aprendizaje y situ� el estudio del lenguaje en el centro de la psicolog�a cognitiva.

Este libro examina la gram�tica universal principalmente desde esta perspectiva psicol�gica. La aborda como una hip�tesis sobre el estado inicial de la mente humana, especificando las limitaciones y principios que posibilitan la adquisici�n r�pida, uniforme y creativa del lenguaje. En esta perspectiva, es fundamental la distinci�n entre la competencia ling��stica -un sistema internalizado de conocimiento- y el desempe�o, el uso de dicho sistema bajo las limitaciones cognitivas del mundo real. Esta distinci�n, fundamental en la obra de Chomsky, replante� el lenguaje no como un comportamiento observable, sino como un objeto de representaci�n mental, accesible mediante la abstracci�n te�rica y la evidencia emp�rica indirecta.

Se hace especial hincapi� en el problema l�gico de la adquisici�n del lenguaje y la pobreza del argumento del est�mulo, que en conjunto motivan la afirmaci�n de que aspectos significativos del conocimiento ling��stico no pueden derivarse �nicamente de la informaci�n ambiental. Estos argumentos se exploran como afirmaciones psicol�gicas sobre el aprendizaje, la representaci�n y el desarrollo, m�s que como propiedades puramente formales de los sistemas gramaticales. El libro tambi�n considera c�mo desarrollos posteriores, como la teor�a de principios y par�metros y el programa minimalista, refinan la interpretaci�n psicol�gica de la gram�tica universal al limitar el supuesto contenido innato y destacar las limitaciones cognitivas generales.

Si bien el enfoque chomskiano ha sido objeto de constantes cr�ticas desde marcos psicol�gicos alternativos, su impacto en las teor�as de la mente, la modularidad y la arquitectura mental sigue siendo profundo.
