In diesem Sinne wiirde ich das Buch auch gern in der Hand der Psychologen sehen. Denn gerade die Probleme der praktischen Psychologie sind fiir den Arzt dringender. Er, unmittelbar und standig in Verbindung mit seinen Mitmenschen, und in einer ernsthafteren und tieferen Verbin- dung, als sie der Psychologe mit seinen Versuchspersonen herstellen kann, bedarf einer lebendigen Psychologie, welche er freilich gliick- licherweise nicht gerade aus den Biichern zu schopfen braucht, sondern die ihm intuitiv zuflieBt, wenn er sich eben in seine Rolle in der Gesellschaft einfUgt. Aber der Versuch, diese Dinge auch wissenschaft- lich-theoretisch zu fassen, kann schlieBlich doch auch fiir das praktische Handeln von Vorteil sein. Aber noch groBerer Vorteil muB der Psycho- logie aus der Beriihrung mit dem realen Leben erflieBen, eine Beriihrung, welche sie iiberhaupt gemieden hat. Damit solI aber nicht ein Bekennt- nis zur Popularpsychologie schlechthin gegeben sein, wenn auch nicht verkannt werden darf, daB in den Werken der groBen Dichter eine Fiille von psychologischer Erkenntnis ruht. Wir diirfen uns nicht mit der Betrachtung des Reichtums seelischer Erscheinungen, so wie sie sich vor uns aufbauen, begnftgen, wie dies der Dichter tut, sondern wir miissen ihnen wissenschaftlich nahertreten. Dies kann zunachst in der Form geschehen, daB man die Erscheinungen einer vertieften Betrach- tung unterzieht, sie phanomenologisch in ihrem Wesenskern darstellt.
