Este livro teve como objetivo (1) explorar as perce��es das crian�as sobre o processo de institucionaliza��o; (2) investigar a influ�ncia da situa��o de vida dos pais biol�gicos na adapta��o psicol�gica das crian�as institucionalizadas; e (3) avaliar a efic�cia da desinstitucionaliza��o no Ruanda. Com um desenho comparativo longitudinal prospectivo, foram utilizadas discuss�es em grupos focais e question�rios de autoavalia��o para coletar dados qualitativos e quantitativos, respetivamente, de 177 crian�as com idades entre 9 e 16 anos de 6 orfanatos e 5 escolas prim�rias em Ruanda. Inesperadamente, as crian�as que vivem em institui��es em Ruanda apresentam mais comprometimento nos sintomas psicopatol�gicos quando t�m pais vivos. Elas consideravam a institucionaliza��o como um processo de orfaniza��o. Ap�s a desinstitucionaliza��o, foi relatada uma melhoria no apego, enquanto nenhuma mudan�a foi observada no comportamento externalizante ou na autoestima; o comportamento internalizante piorou entre as crian�as desinstitucionalizadas. Isso deve ser considerado para desenvolver interven��es espec�ficas para crian�as e levado em conta na decis�o de colocar ou n�o uma crian�a numa institui��o.
