About The Book

This book covers comprehensively the statistical methods and tools used to solve the problems in education and psychology. It explains very amply and cautiously the manner of handling each tool and takes great pains to make clear the use and limitations of each tool. For the students of non-mathematical background, all the mathematical tools required for the study of statistics for education and psychology have been properly dealt with. As far as possible, mathematical complexity has been avoided and wherever necessary, the notations and terminologies have been clearly described with detailed explanation of mathematical steps involved. The book presents a clear, simple, systematic and comprehensive exposition of the principles, methods and techniques of Statistics used in education and psychology. A special emphasis has been laid on the application of techniques and methods most commonly used by statisticians. A number of solved problems have been given so as to expose the students to different techniques of tackling the problems and enable them to have a better and thorough understanding of the basic concepts of the theory and its various applications. This book has been designed to be user-friendly and contains thirteen chapters. Each chapter begins with a contents page indicating the subject matter that the readers are going to study in the chapter. For better understanding of the subject, lucidity of style and simplicity of expression have been maintained throughout the book. The fundamental principles and techniques of statistics used in education and psychology explained in this book provide a firm foundation to all those who are pursuing courses in education, psychology, and sociology, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In order to enable the students to have a proper appreciation of the subject matter and to fortify their confidence in the understanding and application of statistical methods, a large number of problems—mostly drawn from various university examination papers—have been given as exercises for self-assessment at the end of each chapter. All the solved examples as well as practice problems have been taken from the papers set by various universities in previous years as well as from the various competitive examinations to apprise the students with the ongoing trends. In this way, an attempt has been made to make the book more comprehensive and elaborate, keeping in view the knowledge and skills required to understand various statistical concepts and techniques incorporated in the syllabi of M.A. (Education), M.Ed., M.A./M.Sc. (Psychology and Sociology) and M.Phil of Indian universities.

About The Author

K.R. Gupta, M.A., Ph.D., is a well-known Economist. He has studied Mathematics as well as Educational and Psychological Statistics. He has published over twenty books, and contributed more than hundred papers in reputed journals, being published in India and abroad. The books written by him include Statistics (2 vols.); Practical Statistics (2 vols.); Mathematical Statistics (2 vols.); Probability Theory: The Logic of Science; Statistical Definitions, Formulas and Tables; and CAT Cracker: Quantitative Aptitude. Dr. Gupta has about two decades of experience in teaching postgraduate classes and guiding research in the University of Jammu and Kurukshetra University. He has also worked as an Economist in private as well as in public sector. His last assignment was as Economic Advisor to the Modi Enterprises.
