Entre octobre 1984 et novembre 1987, les Parisiens vivent dans la confusion et dans la peur. Un tueur en série s'attaque aux vieilles dames pour leur soutirer de l'argent. Il aura fallu, à force de défaillances de la part de la police, près de trois ans aux enquêteurs pour retrouver l'assassin. Thierry Paulin, le plus grand tueur en série français ayant battu le record d'Henri Désiré Landru, avouera près de vingt-et-un meurtres. Toutefois, la police détient assez de preuves pour le soupçonner dans près de quarante affaires. Avant Guy Georges qui sévit dans les années 90, l'Est de Paris connut Thierry Paulin, jeune Martiniquais métissé, branché et adepte de la vie mondaine parisienne. Toutefois, il est impossible de comprendre et de connaître Paulin à travers les médias de l'époque. En effet, le meurtrier en série, au même titre que ses victimes, seront exploités par les médias pour le sensationnalisme et le voyeurisme. Dans cet élan, le racisme se mêle à l'homophobie et Paulin, comme son complice Jean-Thierry Mathurin, seront réduits à leur orientation sexuelle, à leur toxicomanie, à la marginalité sociale dans laquelle ils évoluent et comme ce qui fut présenté comme un amour excessif pour l'argent. Pourtant, personne parmi les journalistes ne cherche à saisir la tragédie humaine que représente Paulin, qui, à tout juste vingt-quatre ans, aura laissé un héritage macabre sur terre, près de trente-trois ans après sa mort du SIDA le 16 avril 1989.
La destruction totale de Paulin provient en grande partie de la violence de l'histoire afro-caribéenne, quant à l'impact brutal de l'esclavage sur les structures familiales, dès lors que la violence morale et physique peut fragiliser les mentalités de ceux et celles qui évoluent au sein de ces structures.
À travers des coupures de presse, des études d'auditions datant de 1987 (année de son arrestation), des analyses de Frantz Fanon, de W.E.B DuBois, ainsi que d'autres chercheurs afro-américains et antillais, ce livre se penche sur la psychologie de Thierry Paulin par la fracture de l'histoire migratoire antillaise, mais aussi par le spectre du déracinement et du mépris social. Cet ouvrage explore et analyse la psychologie du "Tueur de Vieilles Dames" à travers le spectre de la négritude, présentant Paulin sous son essence noire tragique.
