English summary: This book investigates the psychological causes that stalemate the longstanding peace negotiations in the Middle East Conflict. The author has conducted 18 interviews with five Israelis and Palestinians respectively and so for the first time gives voice to those individuals who for decades have suffered under almost unbearable hardships. In his analysis he shows that official peace negotiations centered exlusively on solving rational and political issues cannot lead to any durable solutions, as they do not take into account the suffering and the hopes of the peoples concerned. An understanding and recognition of their individual and collective memories, as well as their potential to change and their hopes for improved general living conditions must be seen as equally important to peace negotiations as those endeavours conducted on the political level. The investigation characterizes different kinds of typical compromise formations achieved by the subjects concerned - even under potentially traumatizing conditions. It proposes psychosocial strategies for future peace efforts that take into account their memories and potentialities. Thus, the author conclusively advocates that only if such strategies find equal recognition alongside political endeavours can there be hope to surmount the stalemate of peace initiatives in the Middle East Conflict. German text.
