About The Author

Frederick Niecks (1845–1924) was a German-born musical scholar who spent most of his life in Scotland, renowned for his pioneering biographies of Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. A skilled violinist and educator, he served as Reid Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh from 1891 to 1914. Niecks’ Frédéric Chopin as Man and Musician (1888) was the first comprehensive Chopin biography, earning him lasting recognition. His scholarly works influenced musicology, especially in Romantic-era studies. Despite his forced return to Germany during WWI, he returned to Edinburgh, where he died. His legacy includes extensive Chopin collections and contributions to music education.
