Het geslacht von Rollingen is afkomstig uit de Luxemburgse exclave Rollingen in Lotharingen. Duits was de moedertaal maar vele familieleden zijn ook bekend onder hun Franse naamvariant de Raville. Het geslacht kwam via huwelijken en erfenissen in bezit van belangrijke heerlijkheden zoals Septfontaines en Ansembourg. Ook bezaten zij de titel van erfmaarschalk van het hertogdom Luxemburg en het graafschap Chiny. Het bezit van hun heerlijkheden ging niet over op één nakomeling, maar werd gedeeld zodat elke erfgenaam zijn of haar deel van een heerlijkheid kreeg. Zo versnipperde het bezit van een heerlijkheid steeds verder totdat sommige nakomelingen slechts 1/27ste deel van een heerlijkheid in hun bezit hadden. Door slimme huwelijkspolitiek en erfenissen kwamen sommigen weer in bezit van een groter deel. Andere heerlijkheden kwamen hierdoor echter in bezit van andere geslachten. Hoge uitgaven, onder andere door de nodige belegeringen van de heerlijkheden in tijden van oorlog, resulteerde in torenhoge schulden die uiteindelijk afbetaald moesten worden door de verkoop van hun zo geliefde heerlijkheden. In de 17de en begin 18de eeuw waren er steeds meer mannelijke familieleden die alleen dochters zouden krijgen of geheel zonder nageslacht zouden overlijden. Op 6 mei 1735 overleed de laatste mannelijke von Rollingen en kwam er een einde aan de heerschappij van de Rollingen in het hertogdom Luxemburg.
